Energy from Floridas Ocean Currents
Energy from Floridas Ocean Currents Energy from Floridas Ocean Currents Even though Floridas ocean currents are favorable for producing hydrokinetic power, no one has demonstrated commercial viability or deployed permanent turbine arrays off the Florida coast. The required systems are expensive to build, install, and maintain, and they require environmental impact assessments before implementation. The fastest currents occur near the surface, but deploying energy conversion systems there would interfere with busy commercial shipping lanes. At 50 meters, which is below the draft of ships, the average current speed is about 1.5 meters per second with a power density of 1,700 Watts per square meter, the equivalent of 14-meter-per-second winds. With maximum speeds equivalent to tropical-storm strength winds, a speed histogram skewed toward the high end, and constant large currents like the Florida Current, there is much potential to generate high amounts of electric power.Researchers at F lorida Atlantic University (FAU) are studying ocean currents along Floridas southeast coast and have determined practical turbine operating areas that maximize energy extraction to help create a clearer picture of realistic operation for energy developers and others interested in creating pilot projects.Identifying Turbine LocationsIn a paper presented at the 2012 OMAE conference in Rio de Janeiro, Ph.D. student Alana Duerr, who recently graduated, and Dr. Manhar Dhanak in FAUs Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, describe how they assessed the potential of the Florida Current. They used a computer ocean model and observations over two years of speed and current direction from Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers. Based on their analysis, they have developed a procedure to identify ideal turbine locations for arrays to extract hydrokinetic energy, and estimate the amount of power that could be extracted.Rendering of an underwater turbine generating energy from the Florida C urrent.People typically use similar procedures, based on predictions of computer ocean models, to assess resources for other forms of ocean energy, such as ocean thermal energy, involving exploitation of the temperature difference between the warmer surface waters and cooler waters in deep waters, says Dhanak. The Florida Current mainly flows northward and the ocean floor can be up to 800 meters deep. Current speeds vary with depth, as well as season, spatial locations, latitude, and the amount of turbulence. Currents in the coastal areas may also reverse direction at different times of day. Duerr has created a method that estimates the hydrokinetic power resources which vary over time with the variation in current speed seasonally and with location. In general, the average maximum available power resource across a given latitude in the Straits of Florida ranges from 5,000 to 20,000 MW. Locations with high variability are typically less preferable for turbine installation. The researc h identified ideal turbine locations within the Currents core, a region with the highest current speeds and therefore significant amounts of power to harvest. The core hugs the shoreline in some areas and is located further offshore in others. It occurs at various depths, ranging from the surface to several hundred meters below.Extracting PowerRegions that contain both high hydrokinetic power and high power densities, two factors not necessarily well correlated along Floridas coast, define the core boundaries in terms of distance from the shore. After identifying boundaries, Duerr evaluated various scenarios for the number of turbines to include in an array and their siting locations to estimate how much power an array can extract.Duerr constructed a method for developing a cost-benefit analysis for siting turbine locations, and considered power, power density, distance from the shore, and depth at the core as the fruchtwein important factors. As the first two factors increase, they reduce the overall cost, and as the second two increase, power cable and mooring installations become more expensive and complicated to install and raise the overall cost.Using an example evaluation that assumes equal weighting of each factor, Duerr assesses potential sites. In practice, if a developer considers power or power density impacts the economic viability of a turbine array more than the distance from shore and installation depth, then higher weighting factors would be assigned to the former than the latter. The best turbines to use are ones that have low cut-in speeds, or initial speeds needed to generate useful power, and large diameters. By including these as additional model parameters, Duerr found that arrays with large numbers of turbines are needed to extract reasonable and environmentally viable portions of the maximum available power. The number of turbines in an array depends on their type and size. There is an optimal array size to consider. The more turbines are installed, the greater the power extracted, but can make each turbine in the array less effective due to interaction between turbines and the lower the extraction rate. The only way to determine what type of turbine to employ in a specific array is to compare the acquisition, operating, and maintenance costs of each, Duerr says.Using this inexpensive, efficient method to locate potential turbine arrays is a first step toward understanding the costs and benefits of realizing ocean current energy off the coast of Florida. But, fruchtwein importantly, Dhanak says, the procedure can be applied to other major currents to assess hydrokinetic power resources anywhere in the world. Theyre continuing to see how this scheme could be applied elsewhere.Debbie Sniderman is CEO of VI Ventures LLC, a technical consulting company. The only way to determine what type of turbine to employ in a specific array is to compare the acquisition, operating, and maintenance costs of each.Dr. Manhar Dhanak, Dep artment of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, Florida Atlantic University

This robot can clean your toilet (but very slowly)
This robot can clean your toilet (but very slowly)This robot can clean your toilet (but very slowly)There are people in this world who find the cleaning process to be relaxing. But even among those strange creatures, theres one room that is almost always an exception The bathroom.Home to all the grimiest surfaces, the bathroom is a germ center filled with stains and smudges to make a stomach turn. Its the area that often looks the dirtiest and smells the worst. So what if we could have a robot do the cleaning for us?Thanks to insightful people who designed a competition for the World Robot Summit in Japan, a bunch of brilliant techies had to think through a particularly mundane situation How to clean a toilet. But instead of stooping to their hands and knees, they created robots to wipe water off a toilet rim and pick trash off the bathroom floor. One team was particularly successful, attaching a sponge to their robots appendage. So is that it? Does this mean the end of bathroom cleanin g as we know it?Not so fastUnfortunately, a video shows the robot moving at a snails pace, wiping the tiniest amount of water possible per second. The speed alone isnt a huge problem just as robot vacuums slowly glide across our floors, robot cleaners could take their time. Its not like they have somewhere else to be.But the robots intimidating size might prove more of a deterrent, especially in studios or one bedrooms that can hardly hold a person. And, as expected, a toilet-cleaning robot doesnt come cheap. In the end, it seems unlikely that robot-kind will replace humanity for all our shower-scrubbing, toilet-cleaning chores. But that doesnt mean we cant dream

How losing just two hours of sleep can affect your mood
How losing just two hours of sleep can affect your mood How losing just two hours of sleep can affect your mood Feeling as though youâve âwoken up on the wrong side of the bedâ and the hustle and bustle of your commute is more of a bug-bare than normal? If you get even a couple of hours less sleep than usual, then this could be a reason why youâre feeling more grumpy, according to research from the Iowa State University. To prevent feeling cranky and having a âshorter fuseâ try and include these health tips into your daily routine, to help you get a fulfilling nightâs sleepâ¦1. Night sweats are not to be ignoredIf you find yourself waking with night sweats you want to be clear whether you have woken because you are sweating, or if you have woken up and then started to sweat. If the sweat wakes you up then you may be having a menopausal night sweat and should look into ways of reducing this, such as eating healthy foods little and often. However, if you wake and then you start to sweat, or get other symptoms like palpitations, or just feel wide awake then this is most likely caus ed by an adrenaline surge because your blood sugar has dropped during the night.âItâs important to keep your blood sugar in balance during the day. One way you can help do this is by having a small snack of complex carbohydrates, such as an oatcake, half a slice of wheat or rye bread, about an hour before bed. This will stop your blood sugar dropping overnight, and prevent adrenaline from being released into your bloodstream and causing you to wake,â recommends Dr. Marilyn Glenville, author of The Natural Health Bible for Women.2. Is your gut health preventing your snoozing time? The beneficial bacteria in the gut work hard to produce and regulate hormones and neurotransmitters that can help to keep you feeling calm and relaxed. Your gut microbes can even lower levels of cortisol, the notorious stress hormone that rears its head in times of anxiety and can keep you awake and feeling anxious. Your good bacteria, when given the right environment and food (such prebiotics and fibe r) also produce GABA, a calming amino acid that is crucial for restorative deep sleep.Sleep-wake cycles are largely regulated by melatonin, a hormone produced by your brainâs pineal gland in response to changing light each day. As darkness begins to fall, the pineal gland secretes melatonin, which makes you start to feel sleepy. Levels of this hormone stay relatively high throughout the night while you sleep, and then drop off again as light emerges in the morning, easing you into wakefulness.âBalanced microbiota in your gut can boost your bodyâs supply of melatonin, by increasing your blood levels of tryptophan, an amino acid precursor to melatonin that can keep your sleep-wake cycles in sync. Tryptophan also converts to serotonin in the body. Studies show that a deficiency of serotonin disrupts sleep-wake cycles, so having plenty of gut microbes to maintain steady levels of tryptophan in the body leads to more serotonin and a better sleep,â explains Accredited Nutritionist MSc/BSc at sense, Dimitra Sentelidou.3. Take note of timingsKeep to a sleep routine, if possible setting your alarm to wake you up at the same time each day, regardless of the time you finally fall asleep. It is also a good idea to TRY and be in bed by 10 pm â" although this is not always easy!4. Use relaxation or visualization techniquesIf you find that your mind will not shut off then you need to retrain it to calm down as you go to bed. Sometimes the easiest way to do this, especially if you have an active mind, or are a âworrierâ, is to get your mind to think of something else. Take yourself off to a wonderful beach, or a beautiful garden, and let all your senses become involved. Hear the sounds on that beach, smell the flowers in the garden, feel the sand through your toes, picture the blue sky and really make the place come alive. Each night that you do this, you will find that the time it takes to go to sleep will get shorter and shorter because going to this beautiful place signals to your brain that this is the time for sleep.5. Stay clear of a restful nightâs sleep by eating broccoliWhy not make it part of your new years resolution to include sleep-friendly foods in your diet? Steamed broccoli is packed with B vitamins, which are essential to support your brain health. Broccoli is also rich in tryptophan, which as mentioned above, converts to serotonin in the body.6. Soothing smellsWhen you go to bed feeling relaxed youâre more likely to fall asleep easily and quickly. Dr Marilyn Glenville suggests incorporating scented oils into your bedtime routine. âTry using aromatherapy oils such as bergamot, lavender, roman chamomile and marjoram in a warm bath, just before bed. A few drops of lavender oil on your pillow at bedtime can also help.â7. Up your magnesiumMagnesium is known as ânatureâs tranquiliserâ as it helps to relax our muscles, which in turn can help us fall into a peaceful sleep. âTry and include plenty of magnesium-rich foods in your diet such as, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, fish and leafy green vegetables. Iâd also recommend taking KalmAssure Magnesium Powder, by Natures Plus ( £24.50, www.naturesplus.co.uk). This is a naturally chelated magnesium which means it is very easy to absorb and easily delivered to the tissues,â explains Nutritionist Cassandra Barns.8. Write things downâWrite down what you need to do the next day at least an hour before bed. The aim is to stop the dialogue in your head which can end up stopping you from getting off to sleep, or else waking you up in the middle of night remembering something that has to be done the next day,â advises Dr. Marilyn Glenville.9. Cut out the night capYou might think that enjoying a glass of wine before bed is one of the easiest ways to get to the land of nod, but it could actually leave you waking up feeling less than refreshed. Dr. Marilyn Glenville explains, âAvoid alcohol. Not only does it affect blood sugar levels causing adren aline and cortisol to be released, but it also blocks the transport of tryptophan into the brain. Tryptophan is important because it is converted into serotonin, the calming and relaxing neurotransmitter.â10. Keep your bedroom comfortable and restfulPay attention to the temperature in your room and make sure itâs not too warm and not too cold. Cooler is better than warmer. Keep the room restful: a quiet, dark, cool environment sends signals to your brain that it is time to wind down. Invest in a good bed: If your bed or mattress is uncomfortable or more than ten years old it may need replacing. This article was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.

Why Task-Based Job Descriptions Arent Helping Your Resume and What Can
Why Task-Based Job Descriptions Arent Helping Your Resume and What Can Why Task-Based Job Descriptions Arent Helping Your Resume and What Can I was speaking with a resume expert, and she told me that many people still write their resumes as if they were listing a description for the job, rather than what they accomplished. In fact, I found out that job seekers actually google sample job descriptions to find phrases to use!PLEASE STOP THAT! You dont want canned phrases from other peoples resumes or job descriptions. You want resume achievement phrases that describe what you did in a way that makes you stand out from all the rest. What do I mean by using job descriptions to write a resume? When you list a job on your resume and then underneath describe what you did while you had the job, do you simply list basic things like answered phones wrote business plans handled customers prepared budgets managed people raised funds? Those phrases arent telling an employer much about you, other than you performed some of these tasks. We dont even know if you did them well!Examples of achievements rather than job descriptions Achievement s use action verbs (in the past tense for previous jobs) to describe what you did. Think about what you made happen above-and-beyond the absolute minimum requirements for the job (such as the ones listed above).Did you solve problems?Did you create anything new?Did you increase revenues?Did you lead a project?Did you save the company money or time?Did you manage a multi-line Cisco phone system receiving over 200 calls a day?Did you develop a 5-year business plan that resulted in attracting new investors to the firm?Did you manage a $20,000,000 budget, meeting all your targets for projected cost savings?Did you discover new funding sources that brought in over $500,000 for a childrens library? NOTE: Achievements are more powerful if they match what the new employer is looking for. Although, presenting an over-all picture of a resourceful, dedicated person looking for ways to help the company is pretty much always a good thing. But dont I have to tell them more about what I did? Good q uestion. Yes, you do need to give them an idea of your basic duties and responsibilities, especially as they speak to the requirements of the new job you want. But dont stop there. And dont make mere duties all that you list under each job. Where you can use your words to tell a little story. An example of what I mean about telling a bit of a story (we dont want a novel) would be: Managed multi-line Cisco phone system receiving over 200 calls a day. If youre applying for a receptionist job, thats a lot more impressive than simply answered phones.I hope that helps. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in comments. Here are eight kale chip recipes to try on your own.3. SalsaIf youâre a salsa addict, making your own will be a game changer. The better and healthier brands out there donât come cheap and youâll end up with something superior by buying your own vegetables and making it at home. This salsa recipe from Alton Brown calls for Roma toma toes, garlic, jalapeños, bell pepper, red onion, olive oil, lime juice, chili powder and fresh scallions. Youâll end up with a big batch to feed your salsa addiction, plus youâll avoid things like high-fructose corn syrup found in commercial salsa jars.4. Salad DressingIt might seem more convenient to buy salad dressing at the store, but making it at home barely requires any effort and youâll end up with something lighter, healthier and less expensive. Also, FYI: Store-bought salad dressings can be loaded with GMOâs, toxins and hidden sugars. You can avoid all of that when youâre at the helm.Hereâs a recipe for a simple vinaigrette that only requires ingredients. As long as you have extra virgin olive oil, some kind of vinegar - could be white wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar - salt and freshly ground pepper, you can easily make your own. Extras like shallots, garlic, Dijon and honey are added bonuses.5. CroutonsFor those of you who love to add a little crunch to your soup or salads, making homemade croutons is a no-brainer. All you have to do is preheat the oven to 350 degrees, remove the crust from any stale bread, brush the bread with butter, cut the bread into small cubes, sprinkle it with any seasonings you want and put the bread in the oven on a baking sheet for about 15 minutes.6. Tortilla ChipsWhenever you have guests coming over and you want to impress them with an easy homemade snack, tortilla chips are the way to go. Youâre better off making your own than buying them at the store. You only need oil with a high smoke point (canola, grapeseed or corn oil) and a pack of 12 corn tortillas. It doesnât get much easier than this. All you have to do is dry them out, cut the tortillas into triangles and fry them until they begin to brown.7. Whipped CreamMaking your own whipped cream for dessert is always a crowd pleaser. All it takes is a little elbow grease. All you need is heavy whipping cream, vanilla, and honey. Hereâs how to make your own. You get to avoid all of the added sugars in store-bought whipped cream and youâll end up with something much fresher.8. HummusThe real payoff in making your own hummus comes down to taste. If you have a blender, you can make hummus from scratch. Itâll take you 10 minutes and you can pat yourself on the back for creating this healthy homemade snack.9. ApplesauceTo make your own applesauce, you need apples, water, lemon, a big pot and just a little time. Homemade applesauce tastes so much better than the jarred stuff and you can avoid added sugars by making it yourself. Hereâs an easy recipe thatâll only take you 45 minutes and youâll have six cups worth of applesauce on your hands. This article first appeared on Swirled. Average Teacher Salary By State - How Much Educators Earn in the US
Average Teacher Salary By State - How Much Educators Earn in the US Average Teacher Salary By State - How Much Educators Earn in the US There are more than 3.5 million teachers working in public and private elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the United States. Their goals are the same- instruct students in a variety of subjects and help them apply those concepts- but the average teacher salary varies significantly from state to state. Teacher Salary Disparity In the US Those who become teachers do so to share their knowledge with children and ultimately prepare them for careers or college. They do not do it for the money. However, everyone needs money to live. While teachers, in general, make less money than others with the same education (at least a bachelors degree and usually a masters), those working in some states earn considerably less than those employed in others. For example, in New York, which has the highest average salaries, elementary school teachers average earnings are $80,540, middle school teachers earn an average salary of $80,940, and high school teachers average earnings are $83,360 (2017). Contrast this with Oklahoma, the state with the lowest average teacher salaries. Elementary school teachers there earn an average salary of $40,530, middle school educators average earnings are $42,040, and those working in secondary schools make $41,880. The disparity in teachers salaries has nothing to do with their job duties- teachers working in New York State have the same ones as those educating students in Oklahoma. They have similar schedules as well. Teachers spend about seven hours in the classroom each day from Monday through Friday. They also meet with parents before and after school hours. Teachers spend time outside the classroom, including evenings and weekends, preparing lesson plans and classroom activities. Traditionally, in schools that are open 10 months a year, teachers get eight weeks of summer vacation, as well as a couple of weeks off for winter and spring breaks. Those who work in schools that are open year-round usually work for nine weeks at a time with three weeks off between sessions. Teachers who work in states where salaries are lower have even bigger battles to fight. The per pupil expenditures are usually insufficient there as well, according to an article in USA Today (Frolich, Thomas C. Teacher Pay: States Where Educators Are Paid the Most and Least. USA Today. May 16, 2018). Lack of resources in their schools and classrooms make their jobs that much more difficult and is a leading cause of stress among teachers. They face challenges such as larger classes and a lack of up-to-date educational tools such as textbooks and classroom technology. Many teachers who work in schools with limited funding spend a portion of their own salary to buy classroom supplies. After spending their days in the classroom, many spend their nights working in jobs that dont require their professional expertise. Others leave the profession entirely. Some find other careers that take advantage of their education degree. Others retrain for unrelated occupations. There are side hustles teachers can do that take advantage of their training. They include working at summer camps, tutoring, selling worksheets, lesson plans, or other materials they developed for their classrooms; creating curriculum for publishers; proctoring exams like the SAT or ACT; and teaching adult education classes. Those in districts that offer summer school programs can also earn extra money by signing up to work during that time.

5 Innovations from the White House Science Fair
5 Innovations from the White House Science Fair 5 Innovations from the White House Science Fair For some students, all under the age of 20, meeting the President is not a fanciful dream any longer. Not only did they meet the President, they also showcased their inventions to him at the White House Science Fair on March 23, 2015. President Obama hosted the 5th White House Science Fair, celebrating the student winners of a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions from across America. This years event focused on diversity and inclusion in STEM, with participants as young as the six-year old Girl Scout Daisies, who stole everyones hearts with their page-turning LEGO invention. Wearable tech, smartphone apps, diagnostics tools, energy-saving devices, and 3D printed products were prominent among the research projects exhibited by students from 30 states. Here are five innovative ideas that caught ASME.orgs attention. Sophia Nobles and Joseph Santana posing with Bill Nye The Science Guy. Image: WateRenew Renewable Water System Sophia Nobles and Joseph Santana, two middle-school students from Florida, designed a renewable way of generating safe drinking water from ocean water and won a competition at their school. We were researching desalination and realized how costly it is, so we came up with a way to clean water with less energy, says Nobles, displaying WateRenew, a conceptual system that converts energy from the elliptical motion of waves into electrical energy that can power desalination of ocean water into drinking water. With technology we can fix the problems in the world, says 11-year old Nobles, who aims to be a mechanical engineer. Heart-Rate Analyzer Fifteen-year old Maureen Botros of Kansas invented a wearable device that collects and stores workout data, which can be analyzed and tracked by the user. The device called Illumi-cize, which took the top prize at the Kansas Junior Academy of Science competition, uses a pulse meter to measure heart rate and sends that information to a computer chip. The chip illuminates light-up accessories based on the intensity of a persons physical activity. Botros also developed a wristband that lights up when a persons heart rate is elevated beyond its normal resting range. Jonathan Hernandez and Fanta Sinayoko of the SOAR High School InvenTeam that invented an alcohol level detection bracelet named ëris. Blood-Alcohol Detector Another wearable device at the science fair was displayed by high-school students Jonathan Hernandez and Fanta Sinayoko from Lancaster, CA, representing their high-schools Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam. The team designed a blood alcohol content detection wristband aimed for adults and of-age college students who wish to drink responsibly. Upon blowing onto a miniature sensor in the low-cost wearable breathalyzer, the presence of ethanol triggers an analog voltage charge that is converted into a light-emitting diode reaction. Colors indicate blood alcohol results to the wearer; green indicates the user is safe to drive, and red indicates the user is not safe to drive. Diagnostics for Cancer A research project presented by 19-year old Natalie Ng, a freshman at Stanford University, could have implications for breast cancer diagnosis. The problem today is a lot of people are taking chemotherapy to prevent the spread of cancer and metastasis. My project was to tell the doctor which patients will most likely to develop metastasis, and therefore, would be good candidates for chemotherapy, says Ng. She developed two micro-RNA-based prognostic models that can predict metastasis in breast cancer, which garnered her the first place at the 2013 International BioGENEius Challenge. 3D Printed Implant Tufts Universitys bioengineering student Harry Paul, who was born with congenital scoliosis, endured more than a dozen spinal surgeries to help correct the problem. Now the 17-year old freshman is working to help other young patients avoid the burdensome operations with a 3D printed spinal implant that expands with age, extending the time between surgeries. The mechanical model of the spinal column that he designed using computers and 3D printers, earned him a place as a semifinalist at the 2014 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. President Obama applauded all the students exhibiting at the White House, saying We give students the inspiration not just that math and science are inherently interesting, and technology and engineering are inherently interesting, but theres actual problems to solve, it turns out that young people, they rise to the challenge. Obama also highlighted that Science is for all of us and the classrooms, labs, workplaces, and media should reflect that. We get the most out of all our nations talent and that means reaching out to boys and girls, men and women of all races and all backgrounds, he said. The Investment Approach to Your Job Search
The Investment Approach to Your Job Search Investing in Your Job Search The Investment Approach to Your Job Search Brian Ray (pictured) is founder of Crossroads Career Network, a national, non-profit membership of churches that provides online job search/ career resources and access to career groups. He is also author of the 2010 Crossroads Career Workbook, owner of Primus Consulting executive search, and former vice president for human resources and administration for Chick-fil-A restaurants. Like a good financial investment, a successful job search takes effort, time, and money. But in a job search, youre investing in yourself, your most important asset. Here are a few suggestions for spending your effort, time, and money wisely, in order to reap the greatest dividends for your career: Effort Work on finding and doing work every day. Plan your activities every week using SMART goals: Specific: Set measurable goals. Define exactly what you want to accomplish. For instance, sending resumes is not as measurable as sendingfive resumes to companies I would like to work for. Moderate: Select two to five goals per week that you can reach. Too many goals can be overwhelming. Accountability: Show or tell somebody what you plan to do, and at the end of the week, let them know how you did. Record: Keep a written record of your goals and progress. It can help reassure and motivate you. Time-Activated: Give yourself deadlines. For instance, by Noon on Friday, sendfive resumes to companies I would like to work for. Time If you're unemployed, invest time every day that adds up to at least 40 hours a week. Set up a daily career transition work schedule with start-to-quit times similar to a typical workday. If you're beginning your search, focus on pumping up your attitude, targeting opportunities, and discovering and marketing your career strengths. If you're in job search mode, use some of your time looking online for postings and openings, but spend 50 to 85% of your time networking for personal referrals. When you're interviewing, continue discovering and marketing your strengths while you search for new opportunities. For a complete six-step guide with exercises, download this Career Workbook. If you're employed and looking for a new job, invest one to seven hours a week. Use breakfast, coffee and lunch times for personal networking and interviewing. Do your homework at night or early in the morning. Be sure to review and plan goals and activities every weekend. Meanwhile, consider these two questions: How long will it take for you to find a job? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the average time it takes from being laid off to being hired again is (gulp) more than six months! For you, it can be faster, depending on how many hours you invest, what you're looking for, the depth of your search plan, and how well you execute it. How long will it take for you to change careers? It can take a few weeks to a few years. The more education and experience you need, the longer it will take. The key is to start now. Discover your strengths, then target opportunities that fit those strengths. Money Businesses spend money to make money, and so should you. Ask yourself, How much can I invest in me, in light of the money I hope to make? An effective job or career search is not free. You may have to spend money on travel, clothes, grooming, phone and internet use, resumes, printing, publications, education, training, coaching, and more. To free up some money for your search, cut expenses and save on non-essentials. Sell things you don't use. Establish a monthly budget that includes what you spend on your career. And keep good records because costs related to a job search may qualify as deductions on your income tax return. Check with the IRS, your tax preparer, or an accountant for what you can deduct. The Bottom Line At the end of every week, review what you accomplished and where you fell short. Then, set your goals for the following week. Use this Progress Review Preview Exercise to guide you. Remember, the right investment combination of effort, time, and money can pay off for you in the end.

Developing Delivery Drones
Developing Delivery Drones Developing Delivery Drones Developing Delivery Drones The swarm is coming. Thousands of insectoid, robotic, autonomous drones will soon fill our skies. But instead of working en masse in some search-and-rescue operation, chasing down some otherwise inaccessible enemy, or spying on previously remote hideouts, theyll be heightening the worlds got-to-have-it-now consumerism, hauling individual packages through the air from warehouse to doorstep. In early December, a 60 Minutes feature on Amazon unveiled the companys plans to deliver by drone. The clip showed yellow boxes sliding down a conveyor belt into the ready clutches of an octocopter, which then took off with a whine and a buzz, flew over fields to a comely neighborhood, descended to a driveway, relinquished the package, and took off again. CEO Jeff Bezos suggested that real customers could be receiving goods with such a service in five years or so. While the news stoked anti-drone fires in various states (including Deer Trail, CO, the citizens of which are soon to vote on whether or not to issue drone hunting licenses), those in the flying robotics community were simply stoked. Its similar to the venture that Google is making toward autonomous carsa big company throwing a lot of resources at solving a problem thats been stewing around in the academic research community for a decade or two, says Matthew Spenko, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology whos designed his own crash-proof quadrotor. With all that stewing, those researchers have a pretty good bead on what problems lie ahead for Amazon. We can control these quadrotors in well controlled environments, we can do the visual processing, says Spenko. Its there, we can do it. But its going to take an engineering effort. Much of that effort is likely to come from the robotics company Kiva Systems, North Reading, MA, which Amazon bought for $775 million last year. One of its co-founders, Raffaello DAndrea, is a professor who has pioneered what might be called aerobatic robotics. Days after the 60 Minutes piece aired, Kiva released a video showing how their quadcopters can remain airborne after one of its propellers becomes inoperable. DAndrea says that safety is of the utmost importance. Image: Amazon.com Smart Software The push for safety, and feasibility, and actuality, will have little to do with hardware development. With off-the-shelf systems (available through Amazon, of course), amateur enthusiasts can already fly, spy, and land similar quadrotors. Thats the easy part, says Spenko. The hard part is going to be the autonomy. A robot trying to get to a destination and back has to do all the things usually left to humans. That means reading a map, adjusting for wind and weather, making detours where necessary, dodging moving objects. The software needs to be smart enough to say, Hey this is a tree, this is a wirethese are hard problems, says Ashutosh Saxena, a professor of computer science at Cornell whos managed to make an autonomous quadrotor that can navigate stairs indoors. If you are trying to fly, and its fall and leaves are on the ground, how would you figure out that its not trees on the ground, that its on the ground and you can land on it? asks Saxena. Urban Setting In a world where robots routinely catch balls hurled at them, the problem may seem entirely surmountable. But as you move from clean controlled labs to busy ever-changing city streets, things get thornier. People on the street are not yellow objects, says Saxena. They look very different from each other, they dont follow Newtonian physics, they stoop and turn and jump randomlythats why people bump into each other. How you see the environment and then take action, avoiding people, and try to fly in a busy street or crowded city is more of a perception problem. And its not likely to be solved with more power, faster processors, or better sensors. Its just a matter of making the robots smarter. They can start deliveries in a few places, but as soon as they extend to larger scenarios its not possible to make such programs. The software isnt capable yet. A shift from the idyllic, uncluttered suburbia featured in their video clip to the urban centers that contain the vast number of customers Amazon hopes to reach by drone may require solutions beyond the technology. Im thinking about the street that I live on, says Spenko of his home in Chicago. It very different from the street in the Amazon video. Were very tied together, with small landing areas, all sorts of urban canyons where GPS would presumably die out. A four story duplexI dont think you could fly close to that. To get to such a home with current technological capabilities will mean altering laws and expectations. Perhaps the drones will be allowed to land on rooftops, or, as one of Spenkos students suggested, they could hitch rides on local transportation and take to the air for a final short leg of their journey. However tricky the hoops and hurdles the company will have to fly through and over, theyre not likely to stymie the project. Building up the whole system is a significant challenge, says Saxena. But these giants like Amazon are good at doing that. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion The software needs to be smart enough to say 'Hey this is a tree, this is a wire'â - these are hard problems.Prof. Ashutosh Saxena, Cornell University
